Medium (open door) — emotional tension first, physical later. Not overly explicit, but not fade-to-black.

Vibe
Emotional · Angsty · Addictive — heavy focus on longing + restraint. Relationship-driven rather than plot-heavy.
What I loved
- Smooth and easy-to-read writing
- Slow burn done right
- Strong tension throughout
- Gripping plot
- Addictive and twisty: I honestly couldn't stop reading.
- Refreshing world-building
- Audiobook narrator voice by Samantha Brentmoor (mature and full of charisma)
The highlights
- Plot twists! Some were predictable, but a few had me jaw-dropping
- Sarcastic inner thoughts (some were actually funny and had me laughing out loud!)
- Emotional moments that hit. Yes, one part of the story had me tearing up
Characters
- FMC realistic character growth: no instant and unrealistic power upgrades. She starts off weak and gradually builds her strength in a believable way.
- Something I noticed (and found very relatable) is how the FMC undervalues herself and seeks validation, feeling like she has to prove she's worth choosing. That's what makes her more tolerant of emotional distance and why even small moments of attention hit so deeply. And honestly, this feeling genuinely made me tear up for her.
- MMC has all the classic traits romantasy fans (myself included) tend to love: he's sassy, incredibly handsome, mysterious, and powerful.
- Though I didn't enjoy how often the MMC invaded the FMC's privacy early on. I find that a bit creepy (giving off a stalker-like vibe).
What didn't work
- Plot felt chaotic at times. Often, interruptions are used to push the story forward. This part felt a bit cheap and uncreative to me.
- I didn't enjoy the repeated use of separation in core relationships—whether between parent and child or romantic partners—which appeared frequently throughout the book. For example, just as the central relationship begins to develop, the characters are pulled apart again, interrupting their emotional growth instead of letting it unfold naturally. This pattern made the connection feel less impactful over time. Characters don't need to be physically or emotionally separated to keep readers engaged with the plot. Strong relationships and plot development can coexist on the same page, and I would have preferred to see them develop together rather than apart.
- Emotional payoff wasn't strong enough after the slow burn.
- The FMC can come across as a bit too clumsy or even annoying at times. Some scenes use her clumsiness to create physical intimacy with the MMC, and I couldn't help but wince when it happened. It felt cliché and not entirely convincing.
My final thoughts
- Love the twisty plot and refreshing new world-building
- Laugh-out-loud scenes
- A scene that made me tear up
- Realistic character growth
- Relatable FMC who struggles with self-worth and seeks validation
- Great emotional execution overall
- Though it could benefit from fewer interrupted scenes, as they made the story feel choppy and chaotic
- MMC came off as intrusive sometimes
- Some cliché moments could be reduced for a fresher feel
Would I recommend it?
Yes, absolutely!
