    Whispers in the Dark

The scent of damp earth and fallen leaves lingers in the air. Autumn has arrived. The leaves have begun to change, but their colours are lost to the darkness. Only the pale moonlight filters through the branches above, casting just enough light to reveal the path ahead.

Midnight has long since passed. I make my way along a narrow, deserted path winding through the trees. The air is cold enough to sting my cheeks with every breath. Dead leaves crunch beneath my boots, their brittle crackle the only sound to disturb the silence. The forest feels as though it is holding its breath. Nothing moves. The stillness is unsettling, too quiet.

I tell myself there's nothing to worry about. Taking this shortcut saves me nearly half an hour, and I've walked this path hundreds of times before. Nothing bad has ever happened here, and there is no reason it should happen tonight. Yet the deeper I go, the stronger the feeling becomes. The feeling that I am not alone.

A sudden rush of wings cuts through the silence. I flinch. Something black darts past my face before disappearing into the darkness. Something small and fast.

I stop walking and listen. Only the distant rustle of leaves. I squint into the darkness, trying to follow where it has gone. Then a sudden movement makes me jerk back. Something bursts from the bushes and shoots upward before settling on a branch high above.

Against the silver light of the moon, I can make out its dark, sharp silhouette. Hanging from a twisted branch high above is a bat. Motionless. Waiting. Its gaze seems locked on me, fearless, almost… knowing. Like an omen, a harbinger of something unseen lurking just beyond sight. A chill crawls along my spine, as though some instinct is warning me to leave.

I force out a nervous laugh. It's just an animal. I tear my gaze away and quicken my steps, trying to shake the uneasy feeling crawling beneath my skin.

The forest suddenly feels larger than before. Darker. Colder. As though countless unseen eyes are hidden among the trees, I don't dare look around. I don't dare look back at those unblinking eyes. I just need to get to the main road. It can't be far now. I can already hear distant traffic. I just need to keep moving, just a little further.

But then, out of nowhere, a cold breath brushes the back of my neck. I freeze. My heart lurches violently against my ribs.

Slowly, gathering my courage, I turn around. But there's nothing. No one is there. The path behind me is empty. My eyes flick up to the treetops, and my stomach drops. The bat is gone. A knot tightens in my chest. An uneasy thought slips into my mind. What if that cold breath hadn't come from the wind?

I begin to run, fast, as if my life depends on it. The forest blurs around me. Branches scrape against each other overhead. Leaves scatter beneath my feet. My breathing grows ragged. I don't know what I'm running from. I only know I need to get away.

Then I hear it. A voice rises faintly, barely louder than the wind. "Run." A whisper carried on the air, distant yet so close. I stumble.

"Yes. Run." The voice drifts through the darkness. The words are calm. My pulse pounds in my ears. "Of course you're afraid." The voice feels so close now. Far too close. I spin around, but there's still nothing. Only shadows of the twisted trees.

"You think you can escape me?" Its words curl around me like smoke. "Think you can leave me behind?" The voice feels so close, its whisper tingling against my ear.

I shake my head. No, this is not happening. I'm imagining it.

This is not real. This can't be real.

“Denial,” the voice purrs, almost amused. “You’ve always been good at that, haven’t you?”

The words hit closer than they should. A pressure builds somewhere deep in my chest, tightening with every breath. There’s something unsettlingly familiar in the way it speaks, as though it knows me somehow.

And that’s when I notice it. The voice...it doesn’t seem so far away anymore. As if—

"But I'm not the one following you, silly girl" The whisper grows stronger, no longer brushing against my ear but echoing inside my head.

    "And you know that."

I stop dead, my breath catching in my throat. Cold air fills my lungs.

The words stop me cold. Not because they frighten me, but because of what I suddenly realize.

I know why the voice sounds so close now. Why I can hear it so clearly.

It isn’t coming from somewhere behind me. It's coming from within me.

I already knew. The voice was never a stranger.

Even though it sounded like one, it never was.

Because I recognize the truth in its words. My own truth. It's part of me. It always has been.

For the first time, I listen.

Really listen. To the voice I’ve spent years trying so hard to silence.

Everything around me seems to fade.

Not literally. The trees are still there. The darkness remains. I am still standing in the middle of the forest.

Yet, for a moment, none of it matters.

All I can hear are the thoughts I have spent years running from. The fear of darkness because it reminds me of how helpless and alone I feel. The voice that tells me I'll fail before I even begin. The doubt that keeps me awake at night, wondering if I’m making the right choices. The memory of mistakes I still carry, surfacing again and again. And beneath it all, the quiet belief that I am not enough. That I never will be.

I know these words. I have heard them before.

For years, I hid them in the dark. The uncertainty. The things I couldn't control.

All those years of fear. All those doubts. All the truths I buried because facing them felt harder than ignoring them. They had haunted me for so long. Not because they were impossible to overcome, but because I kept running from them. Every time I looked away, I gave them room to grow, to fester deep inside me.

I steady my breath and turn slowly, looking back down the empty dark road. There's nothing behind me. Just quiet, stillness. The same darkness that was there when I first entered the forest.

The difference is that I no longer see it as a place I need to escape. A place where something waits for me in the dark. I’m no longer afraid to face it.

I close my eyes and take a slow breath. When I open them again, I straighten my shoulders.

"I'm ready," I say out loud, my voice steady.

The forest remains silent. The trees sway gently overhead. A breeze brushes against my face, and I feel a shiver ripple through me. The forest no longer feels haunted. It feels like a forest again.

Not a threat. Not a place to fear. Just a place.

The whisper drifts through the darkness. It hasn't disappeared, but it has become gentle now, almost kind this time.

"At last," the voice whispers. A strange warmth spreads through my chest.

    "You stopped running."

The voice is still there. For so long, I pushed it away, pretending it wasn’t there. Now, I simply allow it to exist. No longer hiding in the shadows, but finally seen for what it is.

The haunted feeling that chased me suddenly feels smaller. Not gone. Just accepted and understood.

And for the first time in a long time, I am no longer afraid of what waits in the dark.
